The Feast of Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday opens Lent: forty days of fasting, penitence, and prayer, counted apart from the Sundays, in preparation for Easter. Where ashes are imposed, they are given as a sign of mortality and repentance, with the sentence spoken over Adam spoken again over each worshipper. The day commemorates no event. It begins a season.
